Storyboard...As the name suggests, its putting the story in the form of visuals on paper or
computer drawing software before filming so that the film crew alone watch the movie without ticket..Ha.Ha..It does not stop with that, the main purpose of storyboarding is to pre visualize the film to feed the idea to the film crew what is going to be shot and how it is going to be achieved.By doing so the whole team knows what they are going to shoot. To make one final product(scene/film)the whole team works toward a particular goal having the same idea in mind, which eliminates the difference in opinion and confusion or mess on shoot.
The storyboard defines the type of shot, composition and movement of camera. This partly
gives the cinematographer/DOP how he/she is going to shoot, which dictates the equipments needed.
A briefly described storyboard gives you an idea on the duration of the shot, which eventually tells how long will it take to complete the shoot,if the whole film gets storyboarded.
The other main advantage of storyboard is that it projects the art direction(production design).
It tells what need to be erected as set and what need to be created with computer
graphics.describing the frame with minute details tells the cost of the production.
Shown above is a sample shot from a personal work of mine done for a friend. An opening shot showing the silhouette of a strange man opening a door of what?...who is he?...Its a suspense.this suspense triggers what is going to happen next?..Bring the audience to the seat
edge. Here I have suggested the lighting. This is not necessary. But if a storyboard artist knows a bit about lighting he/she can suggest in the shot.Mastering the lighting and art direction techniques makes a mastered expert and an artist in demand.
Will post more sample shots in the future and discuss about it.
